El Maratón Internacional de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, programado para el domingo 22 de septiembre, incluirá nuevamente el Campeonato Sudamericano de Maratón. Así lo anunció Roberto Gesta de Melo, presidente de la Confederación Sudamericana de Atletismo.
“Con el nuevo sistema de puntaje que estableció la IAAF, y que es fundamental en la clasificación para las grandes competencias, el Campeonato Sudamericano tiene ahora un valor mayor. Y este año, el Maratón de Buenos Aires será clave, especialmente para los atletas sudamericanos, en la búsqueda de sus índices de clasificación hacia los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio”, señaló Daniel Sotto, presidente de la Confederación Argentina de Atletismo.

El Maratón de Buenos Aires, organizado por la Asociación Ñandú, ya incluyó los Sudamericanos de Maratón en 2009, 2013 y 2018.
El año pasado, cuando la prueba se convirtió en una de las más veloces del mundo con el triunfo del keniata Emanuel Saina en 2h05m21s, el peruano Christian Pacheco logró la corona sudamericana en 2h11m19s (mejor tiempo de un atleta sudamericano en esa temporada), seguido por el paraguayo Derlys Ramón Ayala con récord de su país (2h13m41s).

«El circuito de maratón de Buenos Aires, por encontrarse a nivel del mar y por la belleza de su recorrido, demostró que está entre los más atractivos. El nivel internacional que adquirió la carrera, el valor de ese circuito y el clima de la Ciudad son factores fundamentales para convertir a Buenos Aires en la capital sudamericana del maratón”, destacaron los directivos federativos.
Saina fijó el mejor tiempo histórico de un maratón en territorio sudamericano y, recientemente, se colocó entre los más destacados de los maratones de Dubai y Rotterdam. También en Buenos Aires 2018, la keniata Vivian Jerono bajó por primera vez en nuestro medio, para las damas, el registro de 2h30m y ahora se ha ubicado entre las principales especialistas del mundo con su victoria en Milán.

Desde 2017, el Maratón de Buenos Aires tiene categoría de “Bronze Label” otorgada por la IAAF.
Con dicha categoría y la asignación de Campeonato Sudamericano, junto a la posibilidad de obtener buenos registros, los mejores atletas de la región tendrán una gran oportunidad en la búsqueda de clasificar hacia los Juegos de Tokio 2020.
La Asociación Ñandú también ha programado sus clásicos 21k de Buenos Aires, como antesala del maratón, para el domingo 25 de agosto. Tanto el maratón como el medio maratón porteño son las pruebas más convocantes de la región en sus respectivas distancias.
El Maratón 2019, además, formará parte de las celebraciones por el Centenario del atletismo federado en la Argentina (fundación FAM) e incluirá el Campeonato Nacional. Se otorgará una distinción especial a Iris Fernández, al cumplirse cuatro décadas de su debut en maratón: fue la primera mujer argentina en correr esa distancia.
