Según el último censo finalizado en 2018, en veredas y plazas hay 431.326 árboles.
Aproximadamente 200 censistas y 10 coordinadores de la Facultad de Agronomía de la Universidad de Buenos Aires relevaron 431.326 árboles, unos 20.132 espacios vacíos y 9.027 planteras subocupadas que albergan especies de pequeño porte. En tanto, fueron 2.828 las planteras que se hallaron cerradas con cemento y deberán ser recuperadas para la plantación futura de ejemplares. El relevamiento se desarrolló en tres etapas durante 2017 y 2018.
Con respecto al Censo 2010/2011 el arbolado de la Ciudad registró un crecimiento de 6.887 ejemplares y conservó en estado vital 424.439. Para alcanzar estos resultados, desde julio de 2012 fueron necesarios reemplazar además un total de 27.137 ejemplares por falta de vitalidad o situaciones de emergencia como tormentas.
Del total de las especies relevadas, unos 370.916 árboles son de alineación, es decir se encuentran en las veredas; y 60.410 árboles que habitan espacios verdes públicos, parques, plazas y jardines. El arbolado de la Ciudad se destaca por su biodiversidad, en las calles porteñas hay 423 variedades distintas de árboles, en tanto 359 se encuentran en espacios verdes.
El plátano es una variedad que presenta múltiples beneficios y por eso se la sigue utilizando en las grandes urbes de todo el mundo. Es un tipo de árbol con grandes cualidades botánicas dado su imponente tamaño y la extensión de sus hojas, aporta mayor sombra generando un entorno fresco durante el verano. Además, su follaje sustenta el polvo atmosférico y el hollín. Este árbol rústico, denostado por los alérgicos, es resistente a las tormentas y distintas inclemencias que presentan las ciudades.

Los vecinos pueden solicitar al Gobierno de la Ciudad la plantación, mantenimiento y otras intervenciones sobre el arbolado público a través de la aplicación BA147, la web de gobierno buenosaires.gob.ar/solicitudes, llamando al 147 o acercándose a la sede comunalcorrespondiente de acuerdo a su domicilio.
