(CABA) El doctor Fernando Pitossi, director del Laboratorio de Terapias Regenerativas y Protectoras del Sistema Nervioso de la Fundación Instituto Leloir, fue incorporado a la Organización Europea de Biología Molecular (EMBO). Es el tercer científico argentino que recibe esa distinción. EMBO está integrada por 1.800 destacados científicos de Europa y del resto del mundo y en su lista figuran 88 premios Nobel.
Pitossi es bioquímico egresado de la Facultad de Farmacia y Bioquímica de la Universidad de Buenos Aires y doctor en Ciencias Biológicas por la Universidad Albert Ludwig, en Friburgo, Alemania.

Lleva 31 años dedicado a la investigación científica y se convirtió hoy en uno de los 56 nuevos miembros de EMBO; 48 son europeos, mientras que además del argentino se sumaron investigadores asociados de Australia, Japón, Singapur y Estados Unidos.
“La incorporación a EMBO constituye un gratificante reconocimiento a mi carrera y además abre la posibilidad de establecer vínculos de cooperación con colegas para impulsar los proyectos que lidero en el campo de las neurociencias. Con los integrantes de mi grupo realizamos investigaciones que tienen como objetivo general aportar información para el diseño de terapias protectoras o regenerativas para enfermedades neurodegenerativas como el mal de Parkinson o la esclerosis múltiple, para las cuales no hay tratamientos o éstos no son del todo eficaces», afirma Pitossi, quien también es investigador principal del CONICET, único miembro latinoamericano de la comisión de políticas en células madre de la Sociedad Internacional para la Investigación en Células Madre (ISSCR, según sus siglas en inglés) e integrante de la Comisión sobre Terapias Celulares y Medicina Regenerativa de la Secretaría de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación Productiva de la Nación.

«Los miembros de EMBO son excelentes científicos que realizan investigaciones a la vanguardia de todas las disciplinas de ciencias de la vida, desde modelos computacionales o análisis de moléculas individuales y mecánica celular hasta el estudio de sistemas de orden superior en desarrollo, neurociencia cognitiva y evolución», dijo la directora de la organización, Maria Leptin.
Pitossi es el tercer científico argentino en incorporarse a esta red internacional. Los anteriores fueron otros dos investigadores del CONICET: los doctores Alfredo Cáceres, director del Instituto de Investigación Médica Mercedes y Martín Ferreyra (INIMEC), en Córdoba; y Alberto Kornblihtt, director por el área de Ciencias Biológicas y de la Salud del CONICET y del Instituto de Fisiología, Biología Molecular y Neurociencias (IFIBYNE), que depende de la UBA y del CONICET.
El nombramiento de Pitossi en EMBO se conoce una semana después de que la bióloga argentina Sandra Díaz recibiera el premio Princesa de Asturias a la Investigación, uno de los galardones más prestigiosos del mundo al que puede aspirar un científico.

“Es contrastante percibir como la ciencia argentina es premiada y reconocida una y otra vez en el exterior pero en Argentina se ha dejado de apoyarla como política de estado”, cuestiona Pitossi. Y agrega: “La fuerte reducción en el financiamiento del sistema científico es un problema grave en este momento que también repercute en temas más intangibles como la poca perspectiva de futuro para los jóvenes, lo cual está minando su interés en la investigación científica. Estos jóvenes van a ser muy importantes para ayudar a solucionar los problemas del país en el futuro y lamentablemente, si continúa la política actual, esos recursos humanos no se van a desarrollar o estarán trabajando en otros países”.
Asimismo el investigador destaca que “los países desarrollados comprobaron que la ciencia y la tecnología son motores muy importantes de crecimiento económico y bienestar de la población. Por eso es grave el daño que se le está haciendo al país al desfinanciar al sector científico.” NR
