Era un 10 “de los de antes”, con apetito de gol. Jugó con Redondo, con el Pipa Gancedo, con el Flaco Dollberg y Silvio Rudman. Estuvo a una firma de pasar a Racing. Caruso Lombardi, fastidioso por sus regates, le rogó clemencia en pleno campo de juego, aunque con el tiempo terminaron amigos.
Aunque su nombre quede siempre vinculado con los conflictos mediáticos con Silvia y Guido, sus hermanos mayores y famosos, hubo un tiempo en el que Marcelo Süller fue el miembro más conocido de su familia. Futbolista surgido de la generosa cantera del club Parque, con paso por las Inferiores de Argentinos Juniors (“me fui porque no pegaba el estirón e iba al banco, o quedaba afuera”), debutó en la Primera de All Boys con apenas 17 años y el rótulo de gran promesa. Vivió una inquietante excursión por Europa y coqueteó con la élite. Y Guido llegó a reconocer públicamente sus celos porque los regates de Marcelo eran más reconocidos por su familia que cualquier título universitario.
“En Inferiores era goleador y jugaba de 9. Cuando debuto en Primera, yo era chiquito y los centrales eran inmensos. Y el técnico (Ricardo) Trigilli me puso de armador de juego. Era parecido a Mauro Zárate, que puede ser 10 o delantero retrasado, jugaba libre y marcaba sólo cuando perdíamos la pelota. Si pasábamos la mitad de cancha, la tenía que manejar yo” se autodefine a la distancia Marcelo, de 47 años.
En Parque, donde comenzó a edificar su relación con la pelota, integró la categoría 71 y era dirigido por el papá del Checho y de Fernando Batista (hoy entrenador de la Selección Sub 20). Y se rodeó y paladeó los cracks que se formaron en esa escuela de fútbol. “Salíamos campeones todos los años. En la división 69, ver a Redondo y Rudman juntos en el baby era para alquilar balcones, te hacían 20, 30 goles y terminaban a las piñas. Jugaban en una baldosa”, describe. “También estuve con el Negro Cáceres, el Pipa Gancedo, Danielito López Maradona, el sobrino de Diego; el Flaco Dollberg”, añora esos tiempos.
Porque a Marcelo Süller le tocó irrumpir en Primera en épocas más románticas. “Ganábamos dos mangos. Nos daban un ticket para dos botines por año, no podíamos regalar camisetas porque rompías los juegos…”, detalla. Fue en esa primera etapa, a fines de los 80, cuando sus buenos movimientos y capacidad realizadora llamaron la atención de varios equipos de Primera, entre ellos, Racing.
“Íbamos a ir cuatro jugadores. No nos había pedido (Nelson) Chabay, que era el técnico; nos había visto la dirigencia, averiguamos y decidí quedarme en All Boys porque quería jugar. El único que jugó de los que fueron a Racing fue (Gustavo) Minervino, lo pusieron de 3 y, pobre, se comió un baile”, explicó por qué le dijo no a la Academia. Y después de ese episodio, en 1990, se rompió los meniscos y los ligamentos de la rodilla derecha, en un partido en Santiago del Estero. “Me perdí las finales por el ascenso con Deportivo Laferrere. Hice la recuperación con (Jorge) Bombicino, el kinesiólogo de River, y a los ocho meses volví a las canchas.
-¿Y no te arrepentiste de haberle dicho que no a Racing?
-No me arrepentí, estaba cómodo en All Boys. Antes de romperme iba a ir a San Martín de Tucumán, que estaba en Primera. Ya tenía casa, coche, todo. Pero All Boys pidió que terminara el torneo y me rompí. Vélez también estuvo cerca, pero no quería poner un peso por el pase o el préstamo.
-Pero volviste y conseguiste jugar en el exterior
-Me consiguieron una prueba en el Wisla Cracovia de Polonia. Me vieron jugar y me quisieron llevar un año. Pero el empresario que me ofreció vio que gustaba mi forma de jugar y me llevó a pruebas en el Brujas de Bélgica, en el Schalke 04 y en el Borussia Dortmund. Me querían, pero no había cupo, porque en esa época sólo había dos cupos de extranjero por equipo, uno podía entrar a jugar y el otro iba al banco. Al final arreglé con el Wisla Cracovia, pero hubo lío con mi pase. El empresario arregló allá la venta del 50% del pase y lo cobró él. All Boys había firmado un préstamo por un año. Me mandaron a practicar a la Tercera y después me cedieron al Igloopol Pegrotour, también de Polonia. En esa época no había Internet, sólo me comunicaba por carta con mi familia. No me pagaban el sueldo, sólo el hotel y la comida. Y me vigilaban día y noche para que no me fuera, por el problema con mi pase. Me llevaban al entrenamiento y después me devolvían en el hotel. Me fue a rescatar mi papá. Un día él se quedó en la habitación para cubrirme y yo me escapé. Me tomé un tren a Alemania, con lo puesto, y de ahí un avión a Buenos Aires. Al otro día me fueron buscar a la habitación y estaba mi papá, no yo. Tuvo que meterse la embajada para que pudiera volverse.
-¿Y a la vuelta de todo eso pudiste seguir jugando sin problemas?
-Volví en el 92 y estuve cuatro meses parado, porque no me daban el pase. Hasta que me ayudó Futbolistas Argentinos Agremiados. De a poco fui volviendo, ascendimos, pero al fútbol de All Boys lo había gerenciado una empresa aseguradora y jugaban más los jugadores que había llevado. Fuimos por turnos a reclamar aumento, ganaba el mínimo todavía. Como decidí no firmar, me mandaron a entrenar con Tercera.
Allí comenzó el derrotero de Marcelo Süller por otros clubes de Ascenso. Se mudó a Almagro, de la mano de Ricardo Trigilli, entrenador que lo había potenciado en el Albo. Allí estuvo dos años y se destacó, en un plantel con futbolistas que se ganaron un nombre, como Alberto Yaqué y Héctor Santillán. Su habilidad le hizo ganarse “enemigos” dentro del campo de juego, como sucedió con un tal Ricardo Caruso Lombardi. “Una vez jugábamos contra Defensores de Belgrano y él me tuvo que marcar. No me podía agarrar y me gritó: ‘Negro, dejá de correr que me estoy yendo al descenso y tengo que comer’. Después nos hicimos amigos”.
Su trayectoria como futbolista iba en paralelo con la irrupción mediática de sus hermanos en los medios. “Cuando empecé, Silvia todavía no tenía notoriedad. Me acuerdo que una vez incluso fue a la cancha a verme con (Silvio) Soldán, pero los que estaban siempre eran mis papás. Mis hermanos se ponían celosos porque mis papás se ponían contentos porque hacía un gol o me iba bien”, apunta.
Después de su paso por José Ingenieros, su carrera comenzó a fluctuar. Pasó a San Miguel, luego a Deportivo Armenio. “No tenía problemas económicos, yo trabajaba aparte en una empresa con mi cuñado; en el fútbol ganaba más con los premios que con el sueldo. Pero ya no me daban los números por los viajes, prácticábamos en Ingeniero Maschwitz, y se armaba caravana y los llevaba a todos mis compañeros con el auto de mi viejo”, rememora. Luego pasó a Comunicaciones, donde ofició como jugador-entrenador. “Yo me había desgarrado, estaba recuperándome y hubo una pelea de los jugadores más veteranos con el técnico. Y mis compañeros me pidieron que dirigiera yo”, cuenta. Lamadrid fue la última escala.
-¿Por qué creés que nunca llegaste a jugar en Primera?
-No llegué a Primera por estar tranquilo, por la comodidad. Yo jugaba por jugar, porque me gustaba jugar; también me faltó hambre. Se hablaba de mí, que podía ir acá, allá; capaz me había agrandado. Y después me di cuenta de que hay que trabajar todos los días, todos los días hay que esforzarse, y el que piensa que es intocable, se equivoca. El fútbol es lo más lindo, pero con responsabilidad, si dejás todo, te da revancha. Los que se esfuerzan, los que son responsables, son los que llegan. El gran ejemplo que doy es el del Flaco Julián Maidana (ex marcador central de Racing, Talleres y Newell’s). Cuando jugábamos en All Boys no tenía ni para comer, vivía en una pensión chiquita en Flores; la habitación era del tamaño de un baño. Y después fue campeón en Primera, vive en Brasil, es empresario. Un monstruo. No tenía ni zapatillas, no le conocí a los padres, lo traía el padre de otro compañero a entrenar. Ese tipo tenía hambre en serio. La suerte también juega, pero el carácter, la responsabilidad y el hambre son los que hacen la diferencia.
-Te alejaste del fútbol, ¿no te gustaría volver a vincularte de alguna manera?
-Me estoy yendo a vivir a la Costa Atlántica, donde todo es más tranquilo. Me gustaría trabajar en la formación, en categorías Infantiles o Inferiores, poder pulir a los chicos, formarlos en el respeto. Como técnico soy de la vieja camada, para mí el fútbol es 4-3-3. No me gusta mucho ver el fútbol de hoy, se perdió la técnica, es todo muy físico, traemos jugadores de afuera cuando en Europa ya no les da. Se desvirtuó todo, no hay un proyecto. Hoy los jugadores son un número. Es todo muy esquematizado, no hay lugar para la inspiración. Con un equipito armado, bien parado tácticamente, peleás el torneo… Mirá a Defensa y Justicia: no salió campeón por la inexperiencia a la hora de pelear. Yo soy de otra época: a mí me gustaba ver al más grande, Juan Román Riquelme.
