El episodio quedó registrado en las cámaras de seguridad del interior. En las imágenes puede verse como un hombre irrumpe en la iglesia ubicada en la avenida Gaona al 1700 y comienza a avivar una llama en el mantel que está sobre el altar, arrojando objetos al fuego.
En el video se ve también como da un golpe seco en el lugar de la llama con un porta cirio, extendiéndola al suelo y partiendo el altar a la mitad. Luego, se retira caminando con tranquilidad del recinto donde no había nadie en el momento.

Carlos, cura de la iglesia, dijo en diálogo con Crónica que el autor del incendio está identificado, ya que se trata de una persona que vive en situación de calle, asiste con frecuencia a la basílica y “tiene problemas de salud”.
También indicó que se realizará una misa de desagravio por la profanación, en la basílica donde se dispuso por el momento un altar provisorio. NR
