Según el último estudio publicado por Parques Nacionales, en Argentina existen más de 500 animales en peligro de extinción. Pese a tener un extenso territorio, con climas y paisajes variados, la fauna argentina se encuentra muy severamente afectada por la falta de conservación.
Sin embargo, existen diversos proyectos encargados a la conservación de especies. Y esto es lo que refleja “Héroes de la conservación”, serie emitida por National Geographic que cuenta con la narración de Ricardo Darín. El programa presenta seis historias enfocadas en proyectos, liderados por biólogos y especialistas en fauna, que protegen especies autóctonas de la Argentina: Águila Coronada, Caballito de Mar Patagónico, Gato Andino, Tordo Amarillo, Puma y el Centro de Rescate de Fauna.
Las historias transcurren en nueve provincias de Argentina –Buenos Aires, Mendoza, San Luis, La Pampa, Corrientes, Jujuy, Salta, Río Negro y Santa Cruz-, cada una con paisajes tan distintos como fascinantes, pero con un mismo hilo conductor: la esperanza de cambiar la realidad de muchas especies que se encuentran en situación crítica. Más de 20.000 kilómetros recorridos y aproximadamente sesenta días de rodaje en campo fueron necesarios para contarlas.
La serie documental fue realizada por Jumara Films y co-producida por Kenya Films, con el apoyo del Grupo Insud y Toyota Argentina. El águila coronada es una de las aves rapaces más amenazadas de Sudamérica considerándose una especie en peligro de extinción a nivel nacional e internacional. En el mundo sólo quedan 1000 ejemplares de esta especie.
La historia recorre la rehabilitación de dos ejemplares adultos de águila coronada, uno de los cuales se encuentra en la Reserva Natural de Ñacuñán, en Mendoza. Andrés Capdevielle lidera el Proyecto Águila Coronada, un trabajo que forma parte del Programa de Conservación y Rescate de Aves Rapaces de la Fundación Cabure-í junto al Ecoparque de Buenos Aires.
Tordo amarillo
Es una de las aves más amenazadas de Sudamérica. Se estima que en la actualidad quedan tan solo unos 600 individuos en nuestro país, repartidos en dos pequeñas poblaciones entre el sur de Entre Ríos y el norte de Corrientes.
Un grupo de jóvenes voluntarios, liderados por la bióloga Florencia Pucheta lleva adelante en la actualidad el Proyecto Tordo Amarillo, un trabajo en red en pos de salvar a esta especie en peligro de extinción.
Caballito de mar patagónico
Una de las especies más vulnerables y amenazadas en el mundo. El Hipocampo Patagónico es la especie de caballito de mar más austral encontrada en el Océano Atlántico y una de las más recientes conocidas por la ciencia, ya que sólo hace 15 años fue descripta por primera vez. En el mundo hay registradas 44 especies de hipocampos y el comercio ilegal mueve 37 millones de ejemplares.
En Las Grutas, el biólogo especialista Diego Luzzatto trabaja en el estudio y protección de la especie, desarrollando técnicas para el seguimiento poblacional, proponiendo medidas para su conservación, y generando y utilizando técnicas de cría en cautiverio que puedan redituar en emprendimientos sustentables que tiendan a suprimir los costos ambientales que implica la acuicultura.
Puma y gato andino
La serie e incluye también un capítulo sobre dos felinos: el puma y el gato andino. Argentina cuenta actualmente con 11 especies de felinos.
El puma es el más cazado en América por lo que su reaparición en zonas antes extinto es de gran interés para los investigadores y conservacionistas. El biólogo Emiliano Donadío lleva adelante un proyecto sin precedentes en la región: empleando radio collares en estos felinos, quiere investigar los movimientos, las costumbres y la interacción con las presas silvestres del lugar en la búsqueda de conclusiones que ayuden en la conservación de esta especie.
Por otra parte, el gato andino es uno de los felinos menos conocidos y el primero en la lista de amenazados en América. Es tan difícil de encontrar que les llevó 9 años a los biólogos argentinos poder verlo y estudiarlo y por ese motivo se lo conoce como el “Fantasma de los Andes”. Los biólogos Juan Reppucci y Cintia Tellaeche trabajan hace muchos años como parte de la Alianza Gato Andino, una red multinacional creada por profesionales de Argentina, Bolivia, Chile y Perú, sumando esfuerzos para contribuir al conocimiento y conservación de esta especie y su hábitat.
Proyecto Centro Rescate de Fauna
El Centro de Rescate de Fauna de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires es un trabajo conjunto de la Fundación Caburé-i junto al Ecoparque, y funciona gracias a su equipo de trabajo, liderado por Manuel Encabo y un programa de voluntariado ad honorem. Allí se reciben todo tipo de animales silvestres que conviven en la zona metropolitana y que llegan por lesiones, abandono o rescatados del mascotismo con el fin de ser rehabilitados y puestos en libertad en sus ambientes naturales. Los ejemplares que no logran recuperarse exitosamente debido a la gravedad de sus lesiones, pasan a ser parte del centro, como Embajadores de Educación.
La próxima emisión de “Héroes de la conservación” será el 23 de junio, a las 18 y 19, por National Geographic.
